Do not be stunned if I tell you that my counselor is
probably the youngest of all. One breakfast time, my 5-year old son talked to
me in a serious gesture. He knew I was
not having a good day. Admittedly, I was having a very intense week. I had so many deadlines and my stress level
was at its peak. My son gave me an unsolicited advice. I had no choice but to listen
or else, you know how it is when a toddler keeps asserting something. It is
like me saying, “No”, and him saying, “Yes”, which is a battle that grown ups
could never win over a child.
“Did you know Mommy that you can control your anger?” I am
surprised to hear these words coming from my little boy. “Just take three deep
breaths. Go ahead Mommy do it. Inhale… exhale… inhale… exhale… inhale… exhale.”
I just acceded. I thought that was it. I
was ready to pretend that it really worked just to get it over. Then he goes,
“now Mommy, count one to ten slowly. Count with me… one… two…” I thought for a
moment I was undergoing counseling, really. I can say I was probably a little
hardheaded at that time and I thought I do not have time for this little game.
But my young counselor was very persistent. So I counted with him. Surprisingly,
I forgot that I was upset and I started smiling. Gabriel said, “now you’re not
angry anymore Mommy. Good job Mommy, good job!”All I can say was, “wow… it actually worked." I asked his daddy where could he possibly learned this. He said that he was as stunned and as amazed as me. Of course, I could not be more proud as a mom. I was in perfect mood the entire day. You know what the old saying says, "if Mommy is happy, everybody is happy." At the end of the day, we dined out at Golden Corral, which served as Dr. Gabriel's professional fee.

Shall I schedule you for an appointment?
